Here he is!

Well, it finally happened!  After 9 long months of waiting, and excitement, we finally got to meet our little guy.

He was born at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo, UT after 4 and 1/2 hours of labor.  If you are interested, here is how it all happened:

Friday September 5, 2008

Kirsti went with Cherisse and Samantha to the "What Women Want" expo.  That evening Dave, Mark H. and Melodie joined us for dinner at the Brick Oven.

Saturday September 6, 2008

5:51 a.m. Water Broke, and a contraction.  Dave starts to review the instructions for the labor coach.

6:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Mild contractions about every 30 minutes.

10:30 a.m. Take a walk around a couple local parks to try and get things moving.  Went to Sams Club, had some samples & picked up a prescription.

12:30 p.m. Leave for the hospital.

1:00 p.m. All settled in the Labor & Delivery room.

2:00 p.m. Nurse starts Kirsti on a very small amount of petossin to get labor going.

2:10 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Contractions are hard, starting every 2 minutes and lasting one minute.  Petossin working extremly well, Kirsti appears to be quite sensitive to it.

2:10 p.m. Jacob's heart rate starts dropping too low, nurse flips Kirsti to her other side.

3:25 p.m. We start trying to watch Finding Nemo.  Make it as far as opening credits. :)

3:30 p.m. Nurse tells Kirsti her contractions are about as strong as they will get, asks if Kirsti wants an epidural, Kirsti says, "YES!"

4:00 p.m. Kirsti gets epidural.

5:55 p.m. Kirsti dilated at a 7.  We expect labor to last another 3-5 hours, Kirsti gets turned onto her other side.

6:05 p.m. Jacob's heart rate start dropping again, the new nurse on duty rushes in and flips Kirsti.  The whole room fills with Nurses who flip Kirsti repeatedly, stop petossin and give Kirsti something to stop contractions.  Kirsti is now fully dilated.  The doctor is on his way in.

6:15 p.m. Doctor Glenn shows up and monitor's Jacob.  Jacob's heart rate is recovering.

6:30 p.m. Jacob's heart rate dropping again, but he is too far down for a C-Section.  His head is pointed at  3 o'clock instead of 6 o'clock.  Doctor Glenn is able to turn Jacob's head to face in the right direction.  Doc tells Kirsti to start pushing.

6:35 p.m. Doctor Glenn whips out the salad tongs (forceps).  Kirsti pushes a couple more times.

6:38 p.m. Jacob is born.  Dave cuts umbilical cord.  Jacob is 5 lbs. 14 oz. in weight, 18 1/2 inches long.  He scores a 8/10 on the 1-minute apgar, 9/10 on the 5-minute apgar.  Doctor pointed out that the umbilical cord was long and skinny and had a funny twist as it went into the belly button causing the difficulty in labor and Jacob's low birthweight.  Doc says we're lucky.

More that you ever wanted to know, right?
